Create more tax exemptions or eliminate them all? House tax committee hears it all

The erratic nature of tax policy in Louisiana was on full display before the House tax-writing committee Tuesday as several lawmakers presented bills to exempt more consumer purchases from sales tax — and another legislator offered a bill that would go in the opposite direction by eliminating all sales tax exemptions.

The lawmakers seeking more tax breaks went directly against a blue-ribbon task force that, after studying the tax code for nearly a year, called in January for eliminating tax exemptions to lower the state’s high tax rates.

Louisiana has both the country’s highest combined local and state sales tax rate at an average 10 percent, and a sales tax code riddled with exemptions…
