Rolling back bloated administrative state key for 2018

The director of the Office of Management and Budget’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) released a report on the agency’s progress in implementing Executive Order 13771, which directs agencies to eliminate two existing regulations for each new one issued.

Progress has been significant. At a recent press briefing, OIRA’s director reported, “through the end of fiscal year ’17, we are actually at 22 regulations eliminated for each new one, which is 67 deregulatory actions and 3 regulatory actions.”

That is impressive and long overdue. In 1975, The Code of Federal Regulations contained 71,000 pages; by the end of the Obama administration, it had grown to 176,000 pages. That fact confirms that we are truly an over-governed society…
