Support offshore exploration for energy

Louisiana reportedly lost about 1,600 jobs this past February compared to a year earlier. The list of sectors hit hard include mining and logging — which includes oil and gas — and construction, which lost about 900 and 500 jobs, respectively.

Fortunately, our nation’s offshore energy resources offer a major opportunity to help get those jobs — and many more — back.

Expanding offshore energy in the Gulf of Mexico could provide Louisiana with nearly 24,000 jobs, $2.2 billion in annual GDP and more than $1.4 billion in new state revenue. This would help revive better-paying jobs in both sectors, fund more education and infrastructure improvements, and increase economic opportunities — all must-haves for a state that, per reports, ranks low nationally in several quality-of-life categories including economy, education, affordability, opportunity, infrastructure and poverty…
